The early morning overcast is beginning to break up as an eastbound Santa Fe freight splits from the original 1883 mainline, with a 3% grade, to head up the 1913-built mainline – with a gentler 2.2% grade – that rounds Sullivan’s Curve. This freight is powered by a then common set of Geeps, in this case GP30 3202 leading another GP30, a GP20 and two more GP30s. (Cajon Pass, California – March 22, 1981)
