Amtrak train 5, the westbound San Francisco Zephyr, has just arrived at Oakland’s 16th Street Station, completing its journey from Chicago. Amtrak dome-lounge 9372 was originally Southern Pacific tavern-lounge car 10310, built by Pullman in 1938 for use on the SP's Coast Daylight. In May 1955 it was rebuilt at the railroad’s Sacramento Car Shops as Southern Pacific dome-lounge 3603. After the formation of Amtrak on May 1, 1971, this car was one of five SP dome-lounge cars leased to Amtrak, with many painted in Amtrak paint but carrying the SP reporting mark and number until mid-1973, when they were sold to Amtrak, and SP 3603 became AMTK 9372.
